But I think salamat(Exact spelling is "selamat") have many synonims.
1. Safe
2. As a greeting, "Selamat Pagi"="Good Morning"...
3. Yeah also can be determined as "conratulation" but not so accurate... The exact translation for "congratulation" is "Tahniah"...

"kereta" (Malay) = car
there're more differences that brings to miscommunication too
that's why my Dad adviced me to use english rather than indonesian on the 1st time i went to Malaysia
(though indonesian and malay is way too similiar, lol) |

See this differences too...
Polisi(Indo) - Police
Polisi(Malay) - a policies (Insurance, law, etc)
Kakak(Indo) - Refer too elder brother or sister...
Kakak(Malay) - Refer ONLY to elder sister... If elder brother, it'll be Abang... Malaysian will be mad if you called him kakak(only if and if he is a guy)... They might think you are teasing him as pondan(bencong)...
Oh, ya...
I thought Indonesian called car as "mobil" right?
Your father ask you to speak english is not coz that missunderstood matter only...
